Effects of alpha radiation on radioisotope source materials
AdvanCell is developing a generator that uses a thorium-228 source to produce lead-212, an isotope used in targeted alpha therapy. This project will investigate how radiation affects the source and surrounding materials over time.
This two year, masters by research (MPhil) project includes a full scholarship, industry placement, access to world class research infrastructure, all travel paid for by us, a competitive stipend and an $8,000 annual top-up.

Drivers of social acceptance of nuclear and radiation materials, technology and
applications
Understanding the drivers for social acceptance and trust in radiation technologies is essential for governments and industries seeking to engage effectively with communities and respond to their concerns. This research will investigate the factors that strengthen or reduce acceptance of nuclear and radiation materials, technologies and applications in Australia.

Radiophotovoltaic scintillators for power generation devices
Radioisotopes such as lead-210 can also be recovered from industrial waste streams, creating a unique opportunity to transform radioactive waste into a useful energy source. This project will design, synthesise and test polymer-based radioscintillator materials containing radioisotopes as energy sources.

Medical-radium tracking integrated with robotics and machine learning
In the field of nuclear medicine, numerous radioimmunotherapies (RIT) are being developed to tackle specific cancers. This involves building supply chains for precursor isotopes for RIT drugs. A key precursor isotope is thorium-228 (228Th) which is the parent for lead-212 (212Pb), the ideal alpha-emitter for RIT drugs. The concept of processing large amounts of 228Ra raises a problem – how to track the amounts and heritage of this isotope, as well as documenting its radioactive progeny while also accounting for: (i) fresh imports; (ii) natural exponential decay; (iii) periodic consolidation of 228Ra batches.

Point-of-Care Radiation Biodosimetry
There is global gap in preparedness for nuclear and radiological incidents with regard to rapid triage of potentially exposed individuals. Current bioanalytical technologies rely on detection of biological processes such as highly dynamic and variable DNA damage repair markers, or ‘errors’ in cellular division, and necessitate well-equipped laboratory environments. This project aims to develop a rapid in-field, high throughput quantitative biodosimetry technology for radiation exposure triage.
